How obesity is becoming a leading cause for cancer?

Updated: May 16, 2022

There are several studies that have established a link between obesity and cancer. Obesity is taking over smoking as the leading cause of cancerous diseases. There is a direct correlation of obesity to be the cause of 13 types of cancer. The infographic below from cancer.gov shows the type of cancers that are associated with obesity.

Obesity is linked as the major cause of these 4 types of cancers: bowel, kidney, liver, and ovarian. This is primarily because excess fat around these vital organs has suppressed the blood supply to these organs and the fat cells produce a hormone called adipokines which are responsible for stimulating or inhibiting cell growth.

Fat tissues also secrete excess amounts of estrogen, the female sex hormone. Higher amounts of estrogen increase the risk of breast & ovarian cancer.

People with obesity have increased insulin in their blood. Due to this, the body develops insulin resistance, and they get diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes increases the risk of getting prostate, colon, kidney, and endometrial cancer.

With more people getting obese over the years, the number of cancer patients is also increasing. The only way to reduce the probability of getting cancer is by losing weight, and we can help you with that. At CureDiab, we run an obesity reversal program where we help people lose weight in a sustainable way through a holistic and personalized approach. To know more, book a consultation with us here.
