How to check if you have PCOD?

Updated: Jun 9, 2022

Diagnosis of PCOD can be confusing. Many women with no symptoms get diagnosed, while some with signs don’t have PCOD. In this blog, we will cover 4 changes in the body that indicate having PCOD.

Irregular, heavy, or missed periods

Any change in the menstrual cycle is an indication of PCOD. Women secrete a minute amount of androgen in the ovaries. Androgen is a hormone that develops male characteristics in the body, like facial hair growth. Due to hormonal imbalance in PCOD, the ovaries secrete excess androgen & interfere with the menstrual cycle. Periods that are more than 35 days apart are a sign of irregular ovulation due to PCOD.

Unwanted hair growth on the face, back and chest & scalp hair loss

Excess androgen secretion leads to hair growth in the face, chest, upper back and irregular menstrual cycle. On the contrary, these excess secretions also lead to scalp hair loss.

Gained excess fat in the abdomen region

Women with PCOD gain much weight, specifically in the abdominal region, and face difficulty in reducing that weight. This fat is deposited due to high insulin secretion and the inability of the body to utilize glucose properly.

Acne on the body

The excess androgen secretions due to PCOD make the skin vulnerable to acne and hair loss from the scalp.

Symptoms are just an indication of whether you have the disease. To confirm whether you have PCOD, you can opt for these tests and consult your doctor.

Ultrasound test for Cyst formation

In PCOD, the ovaries produce premature or partially mature eggs, and over time, these start becoming cysts in the ovaries. An ultrasound test will help assess whether you have PCOD.

Blood test (Insulin & Progesterone)

The root cause of PCOD is insulin resistance and hormonal imbalance. A fasting insulin blood test and a progesterone test confirms whether you have PCOD. For a better diagnosis, consult your doctor with these tests.
