Can diabetes be reversed?

If you're suffering from diabetes for some time, and you’re tired with all the baggage it brings, then you must have asked this, “Can diabetes be reversed?”

Short answer for this: Depends on the type of diabetes you have.

Long answer:

If you have type-1 diabetes, it cannot be reversed, but the dose of insulin can be controlled. Type-1 diabetes happens because the body is not able to produce enough insulin naturally, and we need to increase it to meet the body’s requirement. You can lower the amount of insulin through some lifestyle changes. To know more about this, you can book a consultation here.

If you’re suffering from type-2 diabetes, you can reverse it and lower your blood glucose levels back to normal. To get a better understanding of how diabetes can be reversed, let’s deep dive on the root cause.

When we eat food, it gets broken down into glucose- the primary source of energy for our body, which gets absorbed in the blood. The body produces insulin to transport glucose from the blood to other parts of the body such as muscles and the brain. When we start

  • Eating a lot of refined food

  • Eat meals very frequently

  • Have a lot of mental stress

our body starts producing more insulin quite often. Due to this, the insulin in the blood always stay at a higher level.

High levels of insulin damages our body in the following ways:

  1. The insulin forces excess glucose inside the cells which damages them slowly

  2. The high insulin lowers the glucose levels faster, and as a result the muscles absorb more glucose, leaving less glucose for the brain. The state of less glucose in the brain is called Hypoxia, which can lead to a coma or brain death.

To avoid these situations, the body starts developing a shield against unusually high insulin levels, eventually becoming resistant to insulin. This state is called Insulin Resistance.

With prolonged resistance, the insulin produced in the body is not enough to transport the glucose, and more & more glucose stays in the blood. As a result, the blood glucose levels start rising. This condition is called type-2 diabetes.

Our body creates a resistance to repeated exposure of any substance such as drugs. Prolonged use of drugs tends to increase its doses due to the resistance developed for it. In case of type-2 diabetes, high levels of insulin in our body for a long period of time creates a resistance for it. This is the root cause for type-2 diabetes.

There is a common saying that people suffering from diabetes have to be on medications for a lifetime. Medicines for diabetes are prescribed for lowering the blood glucose level. Increased blood glucose levels are a symptom of diabetes, just like fever is a symptom of typhoid. Treating Insulin Resistance helps reversing diabetes and not lowering blood sugar levels through medicine.
